Diamond Dons Take 6-2 Victory Over Fresno State In Season Opener

(Fresno, CA) - San Francisco baseball opened up the 2007 season exactly the way they wanted - with a win. After being swept by Fresno State in 2006, the Dons (1-0) took the 6-2 victory over the Bulldogs (0-1) in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening at Baiden Field.

Junior left-hander Aaron Poreda sparkled in his season debut, throwing 5.0 innings, allowing only one run off four hits and not giving up a free pass. Poreda earned his 11th career victory and is only one away from entering the top-10 in the USF career victories chart.

Senior left-hander Cole Stipovich threw three innings, giving up Fresno State's second run off three hits and two strikeouts. Senior right-hander Daniel Morales closed out the game, throwing an inning of scoreless ball, only allowing two hits and striking out a batter in his college pitching debut.

Fifth year senior left fielder Jonnie Knoble is rehabbed from last season's injury and smacked two hits, including a double and added a stolen base and two runs scored. With his 39th career stolen base, he's only four away from sixth place all-time. Junior first baseman Mitchell Bialosky had two hits, including a three-run homerun in the top of the fourth, four RBI, and a run scored. Senior catcher Jon Norfolk and junior shortstop Tavo Hall also had two hits a piece.

Junior third baseman Brian Chavez earned his first hit as a Don and also scored a run. Junior Luke Sommer added a hit and an RBI.

USF returns to action at Baiden Field tomorrow, February 3rd, at 1:00 PM.
