San Francisco Defeats Menlo College 17-4
Feb. 5, 2002 (San Francisco) - USF rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the third inning and cruised to a 17-4 victory in non-conference baseball action against Menlo College Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond in the Dons' 2002 home opener. San Francisco (1-3) collected their first win of the season against the Oaks (0-3). USF scored at least one run in every inning of the contest, posting three in the third and sixth and four in the fourth frame. The Dons pounded 15 hits against Menlo, including five doubles. Eleven players collected at least one base hit, led by freshman shortstop Cy Donald's 3-for-5 afternoon. Donald would also score four times and drove in a run. Freshman infielder Blaine Umeda went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior right-hander Zach Brooks (1-0) collected his first win at USF with a solid 6.0, allowing four runs on four hits. Brooks struck out two. The Don's bullpen secured the win with right-handers as junior Bryan Williams, senior Steve Moses and junior Kevin Annis held the Oaks scoreless, issuing just one hit. Senior right-hander Bryce Vargas (0-1) suffered the loss for the Oaks, allowing five runs off five hits in 2.1 innings of work. Vargas collected a pair of strikeouts. Menlo College got homeruns from junior outfielder Roy Guerra and senior infielder Joe Harden. San Francisco travels south to take on the Highlanders of UC Riverside in a three-game set beginning Friday, Feb. 8. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 6:00 PM in Riverside.
*Notes: Prior to the game, there was a ceremony retiring three-time All-American Taggert Bozied's #19 jersey. Bozied is USF's career leader in numerous categories and holds the West Coast Conference record for most career (60) and single-season (30) homeruns.
