USF Diamond Dons Triumph 12-3 in 2005 Season Opener

Feb. 8, 2005

Box Score

(San Francisco) - USF got production from everyone rolling to a 12-3 non-conference victory against San Jose State in the 2005 season opener for San Francisco Tuesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. The Dons (1-0) smacked 17 hits and Dons pitching provided seven shutout innings, while San Jose State (2-2) managed just six hits.

Leading the way for the Dons offensively were sophomore outfielder Scott Cousins, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and junior outfielder Stefan Gartrell, who finished his day 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Sophomore catcher Daniel Morales provided an exclamation point in the fifth with his first career home run, a towering two-run shot to left after back-to-back doubles by sophomore designated hitter Blake Nelson, who finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and Gartrell.

Junior infielder Andrew Smith enjoyed a nice debut with a 2-for-4, two RBI day, while freshman infielder Tavo Hall collected a pair of base hits and scored twice in his first collegiate contest.

None of USF's six pitchers allowed more than two hits on the afternoon. Senior right-hander Nick Pereira (1-0) collected his first win in the Green and Gold, while junior right-hander Tony Biale struck out the side in the eighth inning in his first appearance since 2003 - a win against the Spartans. Freshman left-hander Aaron Poreda struck out three in 2.0 innings in his first game on the Hilltop. Senior right-handed closer Patrick McGuigan also struck out three in the ninth.

San Jose State's only offense came courtesy of the long ball as Travis Becktel connected for a solo shot in the fifth and Brandon Fromm added a two-run blast in the ninth. Tony Polta (0-1) suffered the loss for the Spartans.

USF returns to action when they take on UC Davis in the opening round of the 2005 River City Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM on the UC Davis campus.
