Diamond Dons Fall 11-7 at San Jose State

Feb. 10, 2004

(San Jose) - San Jose State struck for four runs in the second inning and posted two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to take a 11-7 non-conference victory against USF Tuesday afternoon at Blethen Field. USF (0-2) rallied late but could not catch the Spartans (1-2-1), snapping a two-game winning streak against their South Bay rivals.

Senior infielder Chris Genung enjoyed a big day at the plate for the Diamond Dons, finishing 4-fo-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, while senior shortstop Armand Gaerlan enjoyed a 3-for-5 day with an RBI. Sophomore infielder Andrew Smith also had a two-hit day for San Francisco. USF banged out 13 hits, while the Spartans managed 15, helping offset four errors.

Senior right-hander Kevin Rose got the start for the Diamond Dons and struck out the side in the first inning. San Francisco used six pitchers on the afternoon to prepare for the upcoming weekend tournament in Arizona. Junior right-handed reliever Reed Johnson (0-1) suffered the loss for USF, allowing four runs off four hits in the second inning. Freshman right-hander Ryan Muller and sophomore righty Patrick McGuigan each tallied a scoreless relief inning.

USF returns to action this Thursday-Sunday when they travel to Phoenix to compete in the Papago A's Tournament. The Diamond Dons will play four games in four days, opening against Washington State at 7:00 PM at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
