USF Falls To San Jose State 8-4 In Baseball
Feb. 12, 2002 (San Francisco) - San Jose State got a complete game gem from senior left-hander Jahseam George (2-0) as the Spartans got plenty of offense in an 8-4 victory against USF in baseball action Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond. San Francisco (2-6) pitching struggled against San Jose State (6-2), allowing five doubles and three homeruns on the afternoon. USF trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second, following a two-run homerun from senior catcher Adam Shorsher, who finished 2-for-5 with a double, homerun and four RBI. The Dons fought back to tie the contest at 2-2 following a leadoff single from sophomore infielder Nick Cirbo, followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from senior catcher Steve Booth and senior outfielder Jason Howard. The Dons took a 3-2 lead in the third on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Joe Jacobitz. Unfortunately for San Francisco George heated up for the Spartans and allowed just three hits from the fourth through the eighth frame. Meanwhile, San Jose State's offense scored the tying run in the fifth inning and posted two runs in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead after six complete. The Spartans added another run in the eighth and added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. Booth launched a leadoff homerun to start the ninth, his fourth of the season, but the Dons were unable to build on the rally. Booth finished 2-for-3 with a double, homerun and a pair of RBI. George collected the win for the Spartans, allowing four runs on nine hits and added nine strikeouts. Senior left-handed reliever Scott Mooers (0-1) suffered the loss for USF after allowing two runs off a pair of in a third of an inning.
San Francisco returns to action on Friday when they host the Cossacks of Sonoma State in non-conference play. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Benedetti Diamond.
