Final Stats

(Sacramento) - USF bounced back from a tough loss to Pacific in the first game of a double header in the River City Classic and posted a convincing 12-1 victory against Sacramento State in the nightcap. The Diamond Dons (3-1) had eight players collect at least one hit and one RBI in the contest against the Hornets (2-3).

Junior outfielder Stefan Gartrell opened up the second inning with a solo home run, his first of the season. Sophomore catcher Daniel Morales added a solo shot lead off the fifth for his second long ball in four games. Senior infielder Royce Fukuroku and freshman infielder Luke Somer collected two hits for the Dons, while junior infielder Andrew Smith drove in a pair for the Dons.

San Francisco led 2-0 heading into the fourth and the Dons blew the game open with a seven-run outburst, sending 10 batters to the plate. All runs scored with two outs. Somer hit an RBI double, scoring Gartrell, followed by a Fukuroku RBI single. Junior infielder Jonnie Knoble added an RBI single, scoring Fukuroku. Freshman shortstop Tavo Hall, who reached on a free pass stole home on a double steal with Knoble. Sophomore outfielder Scott Cousins then singled to load the bases. Junior designated hitter Jacob Abramson drew a bases loaded walk. Smith, who also picked up a two-out walk and Cousins both scored on wild pitches.

Senior left-hander Nick Pereira (2-0) collected the win, allowing one run off four hits in 5.0 innings to go along with four strikeouts. USF's bullpen then provided four innings of one-hit relief. Junior right-hander Patrick McGuigan came on in the sixth and threw 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one base hit. Freshman left-hander Aaron Poreda pitched 1.0 inning and struck out two, while senior right-hander Reed Johnson pitched the ninth, recording one strikeout.

 

 

Livesey (0-1) suffered the loss for the Hornets, allowing eight runs off six hits in 3.2 innings of work.

USF returns to action when they travel to San Luis Obispo for a three-game series against Cal Poly beginning Friday, February 18. First pitch against the Mustangs Friday afternoon is scheduled for 6:00 PM at Baggett Stadium.
