USF Baseball Loses 10-5 Decision To Sonoma Stae
Feb. 15, 2002 (San Francisco) - Sonoma State (15-3), ranked 10th in Division II baseball, jumped to an early lead over USF (2-7) in the first inning with a 2 RBI homerun from senior outfielder Ryan Souza to give the Cossacks a 2 run lead. Junior outfielder Nick Tarbat started the first inning for the Dons with a walk and then stole second and third base to put himself in scoring position. Sophomore outfielder Joe Jacobitz singled to bring Tarbat home but the Dons were unable to tie the game. The Cossacks never gave up their lead in the game. The Cossacks extended their lead in the second to 5-3 when they scored three runs off three hits and one Dons error. Souza finished the day 3-for-5 with a homerun in first inning. Junior RHP Aaron Parker improved his record on the mound to 4-0 for Sonoma State after pitching five innings and allowing only six hits for the Dons. Reliever senior RHP Mark Schaukowitch pitched the final four innings allowing only two hits and one run. Freshman third baseman Cy Donald and Jacobitz finished the contest 2-for-5 for the Dons. Donald knocked in three Dons with a 2 RBI single to center field in the second scoring Tarbat and junior outfielder Ryan Sittauer. Sophomore shortstop Armand Gaerlan blasted a one run homerun to left field to lead off the eighth innings for the Dons. It was the fourth homerun for Gaerlan for the season, which beats his three homeruns for the 2001 season.
San Francisco returns to non-conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 2:00 PM hosting the Golden Bears of California at Benedetti Diamond.
