(Cedar City, UT) - USF captured a 9-2 victory in game one before falling 8-5 in the nightcap against Southern Utah in non-conference action in a frigid day at Thunderbird Park. The Dons (4-6) got a three-hit complete game from senior right-hander Patrick McGuigan (2-1) in the series opener, but the Thunderbirds (4-2) bounced back in game two with 13 hits. It was his second win in as many starts against the Thunderbirds and McGuigans's 12th career victory moving him into a share of ninth place on the Dons all-time chart. USF's all-time saves leader made start number three of the season and fourth of his career and tallied 96 pitches, 66 for strikes. Sophomore shortstop Tavo Hall paced USF at the plate with a 5-for-10 day with three runs and an RBI, while freshman infielder Zach Kim ended his afternoon 4-for-8 with a double, stolen base and four RBI. USF's offense out-hit SUU 24-16, but the T-Birds held a 10-4 edge in stolen bases. San Francisco takes on the Thunderbirds in the rubber match Saturday. First pitch is set for noon at Thunderbird Park. USF def. Southern Utah 9-2 - Game One: USF broke open a 2-2 contest in the second inning of game one with a leadoff home run to deep center from junior outfielder Lucas DeLong to key a four-run frame giving McGuigan all the runs he would need. The Hawaii native struck out a career-high seven to go against just two walks. Hall went 4-for-5 day with an RBI and scored three times, while freshman infielder Zach Kim went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior outfielder Stefan Gartrell went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI. DeLong's homer was his team-leading third of the season and 11th for his career.
Southern Utah def. USF 8-5 - Game Two: San Francisco mounted a furious rally with two outs and nobody on in the top of the ninth, but could not come all the way back against Southern Utah in the nightcap. The Dons. With two outs Gartrell and junior outfielder Scott Cousins earned free passes. Sophomore outfielder Luke Sommer drove in Gartrell on a double to left center and Cousins and Sommer scored on a two-run single by Kim. Sophomore infielder Joey Railey went 2-for-4 as did Sommer and junior catcher Jon Norfolk. Kim and Cousins finished 2-for-3 for the Dons who managed 12 hits but just could not capitalize. USF committed a pair of costly errors as SUU scored at least one run in five of the first six innings. Junior right-hander Ryan Muller (1-2) suffered the loss allowing four runs (three earned) off four hits in three innings. Sophomore right-hander John Quine did a solid job in relief allowing no runs off one hit and struck out one in 2.0 innings. T-Birds right-hander Larry Ellenbrook (2-0) collected the win going 6.0 innings, allowing two runs off nine hits and struck out six. Southern Utah 8, Univ.
