Box Score

(San Francisco) - Little more than 48 hours removed from pounding 27 runs off 29 hits in a three-game series at Texas Tech, USF posted a 2-1 victory against San Jose State in non-conference baseball action Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond. USF (3-6) collects their second straight win and first against the Spartans (4-4) since the 2001 campaign.

Both teams scored single runs in the first inning. The Spartans scored on back-to-back doubles from junior infielder Kevin Frandsen and senior catcher Nick Guerra.

Sophomore infielder Cy Donald drew a leadoff walk for the Dons followed by a single by senior outfielder Nick Tarbat. Senior outfielder Jason Howard drew a walk to load the bases with one out, and senior designated hitter Ryan Sittauer pushed a run across on a groundout to even the score at 1-1.

From there, pitching dominated. After collecting a pair of hits in the first inning, San Jose State would finish with five on the afternoon. San Francisco also recorded a pair of first inning hits, finishing with six.

Junior infielder Craig Click singled with one away in the fifth, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then promptly stole third. An RBI single from pinch-hitter Anthony Jimenez scored Click and the only lead they would need as the pitching took over.

USF got a strong pitching performance from junior right-hander Tony Biale (1-1), who went 5.0 innings, allowing just one run off three hits and recorded three strikeouts. Biale gave way to junior lefty reliever Derek Tate, who posted two innings of one-hit baseball, followed by Greg Schwenn, who allowed one hit in an inning of work.

Senior right-hander Bryan Williams pitched a perfect ninth, retiring the side in order for his second save in as many games. Spartan left-handed reliever Brandon Dewing (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run off one hit and issued two base on balls.

Click led the way for USF offensively with a 2-for-3 day and scored the winning run, while Sittauer and Jimenez recorded RBI. Frandsen finished 3-for-4 with a double for the Spartans.

USF returns to action this weekend when they travel to Fresno for a three-game set against the Bulldogs of Fresno State. Game one on Friday is scheduled for a 7:05 PM first pitch at Beiden Field.
