Final Stats

(San Luis Obispo, CA) - USF had bases loaded in the ninth with one out, but could not capitalize falling 3-1 to Cal Poly in a pitcher's duel Friday night in non-conference action at Baggett Stadium. The Dons (3-2) received strong pitching but could only manage four base hits against the Mustangs (8-5).

Senior right-hander Nick Pereira (1-1) pitched a gem for the Dons, allowing three runs (one earned) off four hits in 7.0 strong innings to go along with three strikeouts. Pereira issued just one walk to the 25 batters he faced. Senior right-handed reliever Reed Johnson came on and tossed a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit.

Junior left-handed starter Garrett Olson (3-0) picked up the win for Cal Poly, allowing one run off four hits in 8.1 innings and struck out eight and walked one. USF chased Olson in the ninth on back-to-back-to-back hits. Freshman shortstop Tavo Hall doubled to start things off, followed by a single from junior outfielder Jonnie Knoble. Junior infielder Andrew Smith slapped an RBI single to right to score Hall.

Cal Poly went to their bullpen and brought in junior right-handed closer Mike Bille with one out and two on in the ninth. A wild pitch advanced Knoble and Smith and Bille walked junior infielder Jacob Abramson to load the bases. Bille recovered and struck out his next two batters to record his fifth save of the season.

USF takes on the Mustangs in game two of the series Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Baggett Stadium.
