Box Score

USF (2-4)opened play in the 2004 River City Classic squaring off against Cal Poly (11-4-1) in first round action. The Diamond Dons scored two runs in the first and made it stand behind outstanding pitching performances.

San Francisco wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first scoring two runs with two outs after back-to-back singles by senior infielders Armand Gaerlan and Chris Genung. Senior outfielder Joe Jacobitz drove them home with a two-run double to right center. Gaerlan and Jacobitz both knocked out two hits on the day.

USF threatened again in the sixth behind back-to-back singles from sophomore infielder Andrew Smith and Gaerlan, chasing Cal Poly junior right-handed starter Jimmy Shull. After a walk to Jacobitz, Mustangs senior right-handed reliever Nolan Moser came in and ended the Dons threat.

Senior right-hander Kevin Rose (1-0) tossed 7.0 scoreless innings for the Diamond Dons, allowing just four hits and recorded five strikeouts. Freshman left-handed reliever Stephen Molof retired Cal Poly in order in the eighth.

Sophomore right-handed reliever Patrick McGuigan came on in the ninth for the save opportunity. After getting the first out, three straight singles loaded the bases, but a timely double play preserved the win for the Diamond Dons.

Next up, the Dons will take on tournament host Sacramento State, who beat Saint Mary's 8-2 on Friday at Hornet Field. The game starts at 1:30 PM on Saturday at Hornet Field.
