Feb. 20, 2010
(Stockton, CA) - San Francisco baseball played a doubleheader today at Pacific due to inclement weather in the forecast for tomorrow. USF took a close one in the first game, winning 6-5, but falling 10-3 in the night cap. The Dons start the season 1-2, while the Tigers improve to 2-1.
Game One: USF 6, Pacific 5
USF plated three in the second, but the Tigers quickly tied it up in the bottom of the frame. The Dons scored on an RBI double from sophomore first baseman Nik Balog, an RBI single from junior right fielder Connor Bernatz, and an RBI double from designated hitter Travis Higgs.
Pacific made it 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, but USF roared back with another three-spot in the eighth. Junior third baseman Stephen Yarrow tripled to center, scoring two, and he then scored on senior catcher Ryan Lipkin's sacrifice fly. The Tigers nearly tied it up in the ninth, plating one and leaving a runner on second before Dons' freshman right-hander Abe Bobb got the final batter to fly out.
Bobb (1-0) earned his first win as a Don, tossing 2.1 innings of relief in his collegiate debut. Bobb allowed just one earned run off two hits and a walk, and added four strikeouts. Junior left-hander Matt Lujan started, allowing four earned runs off nine hits and a walk, and struck out two in 6.1 innings. Senior right-hander Hunter Carnevale (0-1) took the loss for the Tigers, giving up three earned runs off two hits and a walk in less than one inning.
USF had a season high 11 hits, with Lipkin, Bernatz, and Higgs getting two each.
Game Two: Pacific 10, USF 3
Pacific took an early 2-0 lead in the first, but the Dons tied it up in the second. Yarrow doubled to left center, and moved to third on Lipkin's fly out, then scored on Balog's single to right. Senior left fielder Chris Dittmann doubled, scoring Balog. But the 2-2 tie would not last as the Tigers plated two in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
In the top of the eighth, the Dons added one, making it 6-3 when freshman left fielder Jared Denham had an RBI single in his Dons debut. Pacific then put it out of reach with a four run eighth, making it 10-3.
