Baseball goes 1-1 against Texas-San Antonio

(San Antonio, TX) - San Francisco baseball finished Saturday 1-1 after taking the first game of a double-header with Texas-San Antonio 13-9, but fell in the night cap 12-3 at Wolff Stadium. The Dons (1-2) smashed a season high 14 hits in the first game, but were held to just five by the Roadrunners (2-1) in the second.
Game 1: USF 13, UTSA 9
With 14 hits, USF took the 13-9 victory over the Roadrunners. Nine Dons had at least one hit, including junior transfers Robert Abel (2) and Chris Dittman, who both had their first hits as Dons. Senior right fielder Drew Johnson led the team with three hits on the day, with a double, and RBI and two runs scored. Senior left fielder Zach Kim, junior catcher Ryan Lipkin, and junior shortstop Derek Poppert all tripled, and Abel homered. Sophomore designated hitter Connor Bernatz singled twice and drove in two, while senior third baseman Dane Braunecker and junior center fielder Bobby Ethel each singled and drove in a run.
USF took the lead in the second with four runs and never looked back, scoring two in the third, one in the fifth, three in the sixth, and finalizing it with three more in the eighth.
Junior transfer Doug Murray (1-0) earned the win, allowing just four earned runs over 6.0 innings of work. The right-hander struck out four in his Dons debut and walked just one. Sophomore righty Matt Hiserman (1.0 innings, two earned runs, three hits, two strikeouts) and freshman lefty Bob Mott (2.0 innings, three runs, four hits, two strikeouts) each made their debuts in relief.
UTSA's senior left-hander Chris Ruepke (0-1) took the loss, giving up 10 earned runs in 5.0 innings, off nine hits and two walks. He struck out five batters. Senior right fielder Aaron Powell led the Roadrunners at the plate with three hits.
Game 2: UTSA 12, USF 3
USF had a rough go of it in the night-cap, falling to UTSA 12-3. Down 2-0 in the second, the Dons brought it to within one, 2-1 when Bernatz singled to left, scoring Johnson who had reached on a single and stole second. The Roadrunners wouldn't let it get any closer as they added 10 more runs over the next seven innings.
In the seventh, freshman Adam Clear pinch hit for Johnson and earned his first collegiate hit, an infield single. USF scored twice that inning after Bernatz doubled and Kim singled. Sophomore catcher Travis Higgs also earned his first hit of the season, an infield single in the second inning.
Sophomore left-hander Garrett Luippold (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) off eight hits. He walked two and struck out two. Sophomore righty Sean Burns threw 3.1 innings of relief, allowing four earned runs off six hits and struck out one batter. Freshman lefty Jordan Remer threw the final 2.0 innings, giving up one earned run off three hits. He walked one and struck out three.
Roadrunners junior right-hander Red Patterson (1-0) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) off five hits and three walks. Patterson struck out eight Dons. Sophomore right fielder Tyler Carpenter, senior center fielder Michael Rockett, and Powell each had three hits in the game.
