Diamond Dons Fall 9-7 At Fresno State
Feb. 23, 2003 (Fresno) - Tory Davis went 2-for-4 with four RBIs including a two-run homer in the seventh inning to help lead the Bulldogs to a 9-7 victory over San Francisco Sunday at Beiden Field. The Bulldogs improved to 4-7 while the Dons fell to 4-8. Davis' second home run of the year came after a one-out walk to junior infielder Chris Patrick off USF right-handed reliever Greg Schwenn. Patrick also smacked a two-run double in the fifth inning to account for his team season high four RBI. Fresno State got off to a quick start, scoring five runs in the second inning to open up a 5-0 lead off USF starter Tony Biale (1-2). Fresno State opened the frame with three straight hits and tallied a season-high tying four in the inning including run-scoring singles by junior infielders Patrick and Ryan Haag. San Francisco scored two runs in the fifth and three runs in the eighth to close the deficit to two runs, but could not overtake the Bulldogs in the rubber match of the series. Fresno State starter Cody Smith (1-1) struck out four and allowed four runs over five innings to earn his first collegiate victory. Junior infielder Nick Cirbo clubbed his second homer of the season and went 1-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Dons' offensive attack. Sophomore infielder Cy Donald drove in a pair of runs for USF, while sophomore infielder Royce Fukuroku and senior outfielder Jason Howard each doubled for the Diamond Dons. San Francisco returns to action Friday when they host UC Riverside in the series opener of a three-game set. First pitch against the Highlanders is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Benedetti Diamond.
