Diamond Dons Shut Out Cal Poly 5-0

(San Luis Obispo, CA) - San Francisco baseball earned its first shut out of the 2010 season, taking a 5-0 victory over Cal Poly at Baggett Stadium on Friday afternoon. The win brings the Dons to 2-2 on the season, as the Mustangs fall to 2-3.
Senior right-hander Doug Murray (1-1) again tossed eight innings, this time earning the win. Murray did not allow a run off nine hits, with no walks and six strikeouts. Freshman Abe Bobb tossed a scoreless ninth. Junior left-hander Matt Leonard (0-1) took the loss for Cal Poly, tossing 6.1 innings, allowing all five earned runs off nine hits, a walk, and one strikeout.
USF took a quick 2-0 lead in the first innings. Junior center fielder Pete Lavin reached base on a fielder's choice, then moved to third on senior shortstop Derek Poppert's double down the left field line. Junior third baseman Stephen Yarrow singled to right center, scoring both.
In the sixth, the Dons added three to make it 5-0. Poppert walked to start the frame. He advanced to second on senior catcher Ryan Lipkin's single to right. Then, sophomore first baseman Nik Balog hit his and the Dons first homerun of the season, a three-run shot to right field.
San Francisco had 10 hits in the contest. Poppert (two doubles), senior second baseman Robert Abel (single, double), Yarrow (two singles and two RBI), and Lipkin (two singles) each had two hits. Balog homered and drove in three, and junior right fielder Connor Bernatz added a single.
USF returns to Baggett Stadium tomorrow afternoon, meeting the Mustangs at 1:00 PM.
