Diamond Dons Fall to UC Riverside 5-4 in 13 Innings

(Riverside, CA) - San Francisco baseball played its first extra inning game of 2009, falling to UC Riverside 5-4 in 13 innings at Riverside Sports Complex on Friday night. The Dons (3-4) had 10 hits to the Highlanders (4-2) 12.

Senior left fielder Zach Kim went 3-for-5 with an RBI and junior shortstop Derek Poppert had a single and two doubles to lead the Dons. Senior right fielder Drew Johnson had two hits, including a double, and batted in a run. Junior designated hitter Bobby Ethel and sophomore center fielder Connor Bernatz each added a hit.

UCR scored first, plating one in the bottom of the first. The Dons quickly took the lead, 2-1 in the second. Poppert doubled to left field and scored immediately after on Johnson's double to left center. Johnson stole third and then scored on senior third baseman Dane Braunecker's ground out to third. An inning later, USF added a run to make it 3-1. Ethel singled to center and advanced to third on Kim's single to left center. Ethel then scored as Bernatz reached on a fielder's choice.

Riverside added single runs in the seventh and eighth tie it at 3-3. The Dons added another run in the top of the ninth. Junior second baseman Robert Able was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Ethel's sacrifice bunt. Kim then singled, plating Abel. The Highlanders added a run in the bottom of the frame to tie it once again. Both teams traded zeros for the next three innings before UCR took the victory in the bottom of the 13th. Junior third baseman Ryan Goetz singled to right and stole second. He then scored the winning run after sophomore left fielder Tony Nix doubled to center.

Sophomore right-hander Matt Hiserman (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs off six hits and struck out five in 5.2 innings. Junior righty Doug Murray earned the no-decision, throwing 7.0 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) off six hits and two walks.

Highlanders junior right-hander Kevin Dickey (1-1) earned the win in relief, not allowing a run in 1.0 innings and striking out two. Freshman right-hander Matt Andriese earned the no-decision after tossing 6.0 innings. Andriese allowed three earned runs off six hits, walked two, and struck out two.

USF and UCR continue their four game series tomorrow at 2:00 PM.
