Baseball Drops Finale to UC Riverside, 7-4

(Riverside, CA) - San Francisco baseball fell to UC Riverside 7-4 in the series finale at Riverside Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Matt Chavez hit the first triple of his career, and sophomore Connor Bernatz homered for the Dons (3-6), but it wasn't enough as the Highlanders improved to 6-2 on the season.
Going into the sixth inning, Riverside held a 6-1 lead, but the Dons would cut it to 6-2 after Bernatz's first homerun of the year, a shot over the left field fence. USF added two runs in the seventh. With junior second baseman Robert Abel on first, senior right fielder Drew Johnson doubled to right, scoring Abel. An out later, Chavez tripled to right center to score Johnson.
Junior right-hander Alex Kalogrides (0-2) took the loss, tossing 3.0 innings and allowing five earned runs off six hits, walked one and struck out two. Freshman lefty Jordan Remer allowed one run off two hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 3.0 innings of relief. Freshman RHP Cameron Love finished the last 2.0 innings, allowing one earned run and walked on batter.
UCR's junior lefty Paul Applebee (2-0) earned the win, allowing four runs (three runs) off five hits and struck out eight Dons in 7.0 innings of work. Junior right-hander Joseph Kelly (2) earned the save, allowing one hit and striking out a batter in the ninth.
USF returns to the diamond for a mid-week contest at Cal on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
