Baseball Drops Tough 2-1 Decision to UTSA
March 7, 2010
(San Francisco, CA) - In a pitchers dual on Sunday afternoon, the University of Texas San Antonio (7-5) came out on top, 2-1 over the Dons (5-6) at Benedetti Diamond. USF split the season series with the Roadrunners at two games a piece.
The excitement in the opposing dugouts was noticeable in the stands, as both teams got louder as the zeros kept showing up on the scoreboard. Neither team could break through great pitching from USF sophomore right-hander Cameron Love and UTSA freshman left-hander D.D. Towler.
A Roadrunner made it as far as second base in the first inning, but Love recovered and didn't allow another hit until the fifth, but UTSA couldn't cross the plate for another inning. In the sixth, the Runners manufactured a run with a walk, a steal, a ground out, and an RBI single to earn the 1-0 edge.
In the eighth, a single and an error put two men on for UTSA second baseman Ryan Hutson, who singled in a run and made it 2-0.
USF rallied in the ninth, as junior first baseman Stephen Yarrow hit a one-out solo homerun to right field to make it 2-1. An out later, freshman Jared Denham hit what looked to be a double into the netting in left field, but the umpiring crew said center fielder Tyler Carpenter made the catch, effectively ending the contest.
Love (0-2) took the loss, tossing 6.0 solid innings. Love gave up one earned run off just four hits and two walks, and struck out five. Freshman righty Abe Bobb threw the final three innings in relief, giving up the Runners final earned run off two hits and added two strikeouts.
Towler (1-1) earned the complete game win, giving up one earned run off three hits and three walks, and adding six strikeouts.
Along with Yarrow's home run, senior shortstop Derek Poppert and junior right fielder Connor Bernatz singled in the game.
USF has a busy week ahead, hosting Cal State Bakersfield at Benedetti Diamond on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then traveling to San Diego for a tournament hosted by the Aztecs Thursday-Sunday. First pitch for all games next week is 2:00 PM.
