USF Baseball Falls to No. 11 Oklahoma State 6-4
March 7, 2009
(Palm Springs, CA) - San Francisco baseball fell to their first ranked opponent this season, dropping a 6-4 decision to No. 11 Oklahoma State on day three of the Palm Springs Tournament. USF drops to 4-9 with the loss, while OSU improves to 9-1.
USF was out hit by just one, 7-6, but left seven runners on base to Oklahoma State's four. Senior right fielder Zach Kim, junior second baseman Robert Abel, and junior first baseman Derek Poppert each doubled in the contest. Sophomore center fielder Connor Bernatz and junior designated hitter Bobby Ethel each added a hit on the day.
Down 1-0 in the third, USF tied it up with Abel's RBI double. The Cowboys added a run in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a lead they would not relinquish. In the seventh, with the bases loaded and no outs, sophomore Stephen Yarrow grounded out to first to score the Dons first run of the inning. Kim then sacrificed to center to make it 6-3. USF rallied in the ninth, when Kim doubled home Ethel to make it 6-4, but that was all the Dons would get.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Hiserman (0-3) took the loss in his first start of the season. Hiserman threw 7.0 innings, allowing six runs (two earned), off seven hits and one walk. The transfer struck out a season high 10 batters. Sophomore lefty Garrett Luippold threw the final inning, striking out the side.
For the Cowboys, junior right-hander Tyler Blanford (2-0) earned the win, tossing 6.0 inning and giving up three earned runs off three hits, with three walks and 10 strikeouts.
USF concludes the Palm Springs Tournament tomorrow, taking on Gonzaga in a non-conference contest at 2:00 PM.
