Diamond Dons Shutout Bakersfield 3-0

(San Francisco, CA) - USF baseball earned its second shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. The Dons (6-6) had eight hits, including four doubles, and six USF pitchers held the Roadrunners (5-6) to just five base knocks.
Senior right-hander Alex Kalogrides (1-0) earned his first win of the 2010 season, tossing 3.0 innings, not allowing a run off two hits, and added a strikeout. Freshman right-hander Haden Hinkle (2.0 innings, one hit, two strikeouts), sophomore lefty Bob Mott (1.0 inning), freshman right-hander Kyle Zimmer (1.0 inning, one hit, one strikeout), and junior left-hander Garrett Luippold (1.0 inning, one hit, two strikeouts) held the Runners scoreless through eight. Senior right-hander Doug Murray (1) earned the first save for USF on the year with a scoreless ninth.
USF plated one in the first to take the early 1-0 lead. Junior center fielder Pete Lavin doubled to start the frame and moved to third on junior right fielder Connor Bernatz's ground out. Lavin then scored on an RBI single to center from junior third baseman Stephen Yarrow.
In the fourth, junior catcher Travis Higgs walked and advanced to second on a balk by Roadrunners pitcher Matt Reyes. Sophomore first baseman Matt Chavez doubled to right, plating Higgs. An inning later, the Dons made it 3-0 when Bernatz doubled to right and scored on senior shortstop Derek Poppert's single to left.
Lavin, Bernatz, Chavez, and freshman left fielder Jared Denham all doubled for USF. Denham leads the Dons with five doubles and a .542 batting average.
Reyes (1-1) took the loss for Bakersfield. In 7.1 innings, Reyes gave up three earned runs off eight hits and four walks. He added eight strikeouts.
USF and Bakersfield return to Benedetti tomorrow for game two of the two-game series. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
