Baseball Earns Second Straight Shutout, 2-0 over Bakersfield
March 10, 2010
(San Francisco, CA) - USF baseball earned the series sweep and its second consecutive shutout, taking the 2-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield (5-7) at Benedetti Diamond on Wednesday afternoon. The Dons (7-6) have not allowed a run in their last 19 innings, including the ninth inning of the University of Texas San Antonio game last Sunday.
No one crossed the plate through three innings, but the Dons broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Senior shortstop Derek Poppert reached on a two bag error by Bakersfield's left fielder Mick Gaston, who misplayed the fly ball. Poppert then stole third base and scored on senior catcher Ryan Lipkin's single to left center.
In the eighth, the Dons had the bases loaded for junior right fielder Connor Bernatz, who smacked a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0.
Sophomore lefty Jordan Remer (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.0 innings and striking out two. Junior LHP Matt Lujan started, tossing a scoreless first. Junior righty Jonathan Abramson (2.0 innings, two strikeouts), freshman right-hander Abe Bobb (1.0 inning), and junior left-hander Garrett Luippold (2.0 innings, three strikeouts) helped hold the Roadrunners scoreless through eight innings. Senior right-hander Joe Oropeza (1) earned his first save of the season, throwing a scoreless ninth and striking out one batter.
CSUB starter Brandon Van Dam (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) off three hits and three walks. Van Dam struck out nine batters in 7.0 innings.
USF had five hits in the contest, all singles by Poppert, Lipkin, junior center fielder Pete Lavin, freshman second baseman Jason Mahood, and sophomore designated hitter Matt Chavez.
Over the weekend, the Dons travel to San Diego, CA for a four-game tournament co-hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego. USF will first meet the Toreros in a non-conference game on the USD campus at 2:00 PM on Thursday. Friday through Sunday, the Dons will play at San Diego State, meeting Fresno State on Friday at 2:00 PM, the University of Alabama Birmingham on Saturday at 2:00 PM, then closing out the weekend against SDSU at 3:00 PM on Sunday.
