Diamond Dons Fall To Cal 6-2

(Berkeley, CA) - San Francisco baseball fell to Bay Area rival California, 6-2 in non-conference action at Evans Field on Tuesday. USF (6-8) was out hit 7-4 by Cal (10-1-1) and made costly errors in the loss. Cal scored twice in the bottom of the second inning. After sophomore center fielder Brett Jackson was hit by a pitch, sophomore catcher Dylan Tonneson reached base safely on a sacrifice bunt. USF's first costly error of the game, a throwing error by pitcher Evan Fredrickson, put Jackson on third. Sophomore right fielder Blake Smith doubled down the right field line, scoring Jackson and advancing Tonneson to third. Tonneson scored an out later on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Michael Brady. USF tied it 2-2 in the third when the Bears made an error of their own. Junior third baseman Zach Kim reached on an error by freshman left fielder Mark Cahna and advanced to second. Sophomore catcher Ryan Lipkin grounded out, moving Kim to third before senior shortstop Tavo Hall singled through the right side. After two singles by senior second baseman Joey Railey and freshman center fielder Connor Bernatz, the Bears made another error, this time by Brady, scoring Hall. Cal regained the lead in the bottom of the frame when with one runner on, senior second baseman Josh Satin pounded the ball over the left center field fence. The Bears scored two insurance runs in the eighth helped along by another Dons error. Junior left-hander Evan Fredrickson (1-2) took the loss for USF, allowing four runs (three earned) off four hits and six walks, and adding seven strikeouts. Freshman righty Sean Burns allowed the final two runs (one earned) off three hits, one walk, and struck out one Bear in 1.1 innings of relief.
Railey, Bernatz, Hall, and senior first baseman Mitchell Bialosky were the only Dons to get hits on the day. Hall and Bernatz each added an RBI. Bears freshman right-hander Kevin Miller (1-0) earns his first victory at Cal, allowing two runs (one earned) off four hits, no walks and added two strikeouts. Leading the Bears at the plate was Satin, who went 2-for-5 with a homerun, a run scored, and two RBI. USF plays at Benedetti Diamond for just the second time this season when it hosts Pacific in a 2:00 PM non-conference match up tomorrow. |
