Dons Baseball Falls to USD 15-7
March 11, 2010
(San Diego, CA) - San Francisco baseball fell to San Diego 15-7 in non-conference action at Cunningham Stadium on Thursday afternoon, opening day of the San Diego State/University of San Diego Tournament. Both the Dons and Toreros are 7-7 after today's contest.
USF held a 5-0 advantage through three innings, but a seven run third for USD changed the momentum of the game, and the Dons just couldn't come back. In the first, junior third baseman Stephen Yarrow gave the Dons a quick 2-0 lead with his team and conference leading sixth homerun, a two-run blast to center field. USF added one in the second when freshman left fielder Jared Denham scored on a wild pitch. Then, in the third, the Dons took the 5-0 lead with two more off RBI doubles from Yarrow and senior catcher Ryan Lipkin.
San Diego batted around in the bottom of the frame, plating seven runs and taking a 7-5 lead. The Dons cut that lead by one, making it 7-6 in the fourth. Denham reached on an error, and then moved up to third on two wild pitches. He scored when junior center fielder Pete Lavin reached on the Toreros third error of the frame.
San Diego got the run back in the fifth, but again USF stayed close with one in the sixth, making it 8-7 on sophomore designated hitter Matt Chavez's RBI single. But the Toreros put the game out of reach with six runs in the bottom of the sixth, and one more in the seventh to make it 15-7.
Senior right-hander Alex Kalogrides (1-1) earned the loss in relief, giving up three earned runs off three hits in less than an inning of work. Freshman Haden Hinkle made his first career start, allowing three earned runs off six hits and a walk, and striking out one in 2.2 innings. USD's freshman Sam Wolff (1-0) earned the win, tossing 1.0 relief inning, and giving up just two earned runs off two hits and a walk, and he struck out one Don.
USF managed nine hits in the contest, led by Yarrow, who had three hits, including a homerun, a double, and three RBI. Denham had two hits, including his team leading sixth double. Chavez also had two hits and an RBI. Lipkin doubled in a run, and Lavin added an RBI single.
USF will meet Fresno State tomorrow on the campus of San Diego State. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM. The Bulldogs defeated Cal State Fullerton 5-0 in their first game of the tournament today.
