Diamond Dons Fall to Fresno State 5-2

(San Diego, CA) - San Francisco baseball fell to Fresno State 5-2 on Friday in the second game of the Aztec Invitational on the campus of San Diego State University. USF falls to 7-8 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 8-6.
For the second time in the tournament, the Dons led early. In the third, junior center fielder Pete Lavin hit his first homerun as a Don, giving USF a 1-0 lead. Then, in the fourth, junior third baseman Stephen Yarrow hit his team and conference leading seventh homerun to make it 2-0.
But Fresno State tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame. With runners on first and third, designated hitter Kenny Wise singled to right, and then catcher Trent Garrison laid down a sacrifice bunt to score the second run of the inning. Fresno State took the lead in the eighth, plating three runs to put the Dons down 5-2.
Senior catcher Ryan Lipkin had two hits for USF, including a double. Senior shortstop Derek Poppert also doubled, while sophomore first baseman Matt Chavez and freshman designated hitter Jason Mahood singled.
Senior RHP Doug Murray (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) off eight hits. Murray did not walk a batter, and struck out three in 7.0 innings. Fresno State's Cody Kendall (1-2) earned the win in relief, not giving up a run off two hits. Kendall struck out three in 4.0 innings.
USF will meet the University of Alabama Birmingham tomorrow on the campus of San Diego State. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM. UAB fell to San Diego 5-2 today and also fell to San Diego State 8-7 on Thursday.
