Baseball Falls 10-1 to UC Riverside
March 20, 2010
(Riverside, CA) - San Francisco baseball took a 1-0 lead in the third, but a six run fifth gave UC Riverside a lead the Dons couldn't come back from, as they fell 10-1 to the Highlanders on Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. USF evens up their record at 10-10 and UCR improves to 9-5.
In the third inning, USF took the 1-0 lead off an RBI double from senior catcher Ryan Lipkin. Sophomore first baseman Nik Balog had singled with two outs, and scored on Lipkin's smash to left center. But the Highlanders had a big fifth inning, plating six, and scored another in the sixth to make it 7-1. They added another three in the seventh to push the lead to 10-1.
Junior pinch hitter Travis Higgs also doubled, while junior center fielder Pete Lavin, sophomore designated hitter Matt Chavez, and Balog all singled. Lavin added his sixth stolen base of the season.
Junior left-hander Garrett Luippold (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) off four hits and a walk, and added a season high six strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Junior right-hander Dustin Emmons (3-1) earned the win, giving up one earned run off four hits and two walks, and added six strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
The Dons and Highlanders finish the series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 1:00 PM.
