USF Baseball Downs Pacific 7-1
April 7, 2009 (Stockton, CA) - San Francisco baseball earned the 7-1 victory over Pacific at Klein Family Field on Tuesday night. Of the Dons (15-18) seven hits, four were doubles. USF jumped out to an early lead, making it 5-0 after just two innings. In the first, senior left fielder Zach Kim singled, moved to second on junior center fielder Bobby Ethel's sacrifice bunt, and then stole third before he scored on junior designated hitter Ryan Lipkin's double down the left field line. Kim's steal is his team and WCC leading 18th on the year. Senior third baseman Dane Braunecker then hit into an RBI fielder's choice, plating junior shortstop Derek Poppert who had walked earlier. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Yarrow doubled, scoring Lipkin to make it 3-0. In the second, the Dons added two more. With runners on second and third, Poppert sacrificed to right field which plated freshman catcher Mason Morioka and Ethel, whose speed allowed him to score from second. Pacific (11-16) would score their only run in the eighth off a sacrifice fly from sophomore second baseman J.B. Brown, but the Dons plated two in the final frame. After sophomore Travis Higgs walked, he advanced to second on a passed ball and then to third on a wild pitch. Kim doubled to left, scoring Higgs. Junior pinch hitter Chris Dittmann grounded out to short, but the productive out pushed Kim to third, who scored on Poppert's second sacrifice fly of the night. Freshman right-hander Cameron Love (2-1) earned the win, not giving up a run off two hits, with one walk and two strikeouts in 3.0 inning of work. Kim led the Dons at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a stolen base. Poppert had a single and three RBI. Lipkin and Yarrow each doubled and drove in a run. Braunecker singled, and also drove in a run.
Junior lefty David Rowse (1-1) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing five earned runs off three hits and four walks in 2.0 innings. Junior shortstop Ben Gorang led Pacific at the plate with two hits, both doubles. USF travels to Loyola Marymount for a three game West Coast Conference series this weekend. Because of the Holiday weekend, the Dons and Lions will meet Thursday at 3:00 PM and play a double-header on Saturday beginning at 11:00 AM. |
