San Francisco Loses Another Heartbreaker 7-6 To Pepperdine In WCC Action
April 20, 2002 (Malibu, CA) - Freshman infielder Blaine Umeda powered his first career homerun and junior outfielder Ryan Sittauer crushed his second long ball in two games, staking USF to a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. It would not hold up as Pepperdine erupted for a six-run seventh and successfully hit and run in the bottom of the ninth to take a 7-6 West Coast Conference baseball win at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Saturday. USF (10-33, 2-17 WCC) dropped their second one-run loss in two games against the Waves (21-21, 10-6 WCC). San Francisco got a great start from junior right-hander Bryan Williams, who threw a one-hitter through six innings. Williams got roughed up in the seventh though and finished the game going 6.2 innings, allowing six runs off five hits and struck out four. USF junior reliever Zach Brooks (2-1) suffered the loss after pitching 1.1 innings, allowing one run off five hits. Umeda inserted into the lineup in the clean up spot for the first time, responded with a 2-for-4 day with a three-run homerun and a double, finishing with three RBI. Fellow Hawaiian freshman infielder Cy Donald went 2-for-5 with a double, while sophomore infielder Armand Gaerlan went 2-for-5 and drove in a run. Sittauer ended his day 2-for-4 with a homerun and a pair of RBI.
San Francisco looks to bounce back against Pepperdine in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
