Diamond Dons Down Aggies 10-1

April 20, 2004

DAVIS, Calif. - Joe Jacobitz had three hits and the Dons broke open a close game with a four-run seventh as the University of San Francisco defeated UC Davis 10-1 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

With the loss the Aggies fall to 31-12-1 on the season while USF improves to 19-21.

USF scored first with a pair of runs in the third inning following RBI singles from Armand Gaerlan and Chris Genung. Dons starter Steve Spurgeon cruised through the opening innings. He gave up two singles in his four innings of work, not allowing a runner past second base. He struckout two batters while not allowing a walk.

The Dons added a single run in the sixth on Jonnie Knoble's RBI single that scored Scott Cousins. With two outs and Cousins on first, Matt Kamigawachi's error of a Royce Fukuroku grounder kept the inning alive and allowed Knoble to come to the plate.

In the bottom of the sixth Lukas Kirby put the Aggies on the board with a two-out home run down the leftfield line, his fourth home run of the season.

Aggie starter Mick Philips went five solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Jack Boyl came on in the sixth to allow an unearned run then in the seventh sandwiched two walks around a hit batter to load the bases. Andrew Kloos came on with no outs in the seventh, but two wild pitches plated the first two runs then a single from Jacobitz scored the third. The Dons put up four runs in the inning on just one hit.

The Dons tacked on three more in the eighth, taking advantage of two hits and an Aggie error that led to all three runs being unearned.

Offensively the Aggies managed just five hits, two from Kirby and one each from Robby Tulk, Jaime Castillo and Kamigawachi. Philips took the loss as his record falls to 1-1 this season.

USF pounded out 11 hits on the afternoon led by Jacobitz, along with two each from Andrew Smith, Gaerlan and Genung. Spurgeon earned his first victory of the season with his four-inning performance.
