USF Baseball Falls To Hawaii 6-5
April 21, 2004
SAN FRANCISCO - The USF baseball team took a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning only to see the visiting Rainbows from the University of Hawaii come back to beat the Dons 6-5 Wednesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. USF (19-22) committed a season-high four errors, three in a four run inning that sparked the victory for Hawaii (23-13).
Hawaii got on the board early, striking for a run in the first inning. Brian Finegan doubled to left field to open the game, and was sacrificed to third, and eventually scored on a balk by USF starter Nick Periera.
USF got the run back in their half of the first inning, with senior first baseman Chris Genung driving in his 31st run of the season with an RBI single up the middle, scoring junior third baseman Andrew Smith. Genung pounded out three more hits
USF scored three more in the third, benefiting from four consecutive two-out base hits. The big blow was a triple of the bat of senior Joe Jacobitz. Jacobitz had two hits on the day, as did freshman designated hitter Blake Nelson.
After the first inning, the Dons held the Rainbow bats in check, retiring 15 hitters in a row. It wasn't until the seventh inning that the Rainbows started to make a little noise. After an error and a double gave Hawaii second and third with no outs, Schafer Magana ripped a two-run double to make the score 5-3. On the next play, Issac Omura laid down a bunt to attempt to move the runner to third, but when the throw to first got away, the runner came around to score. The final blow came off the bat of Matthew Inouye, who doubled in two runs and gave Hawaii a 6-5 lead.
USF would threaten in the eighth and ninth, but could not get the tying run across. Keahi Rawlins (2-2) picked up the win for Hawaii. TJ Franco (5-4) was saddled with the loss for the Dons.
Next up the Dons travel to Los Angeles for a pivotal WCC three game series with Loyola Marymount. Friday the two teams square off at 3:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday are both 1:00 PM starts.
