Diamond Dons Lose At Nevada, Host Gaels This Weekend
April 23, 2002 Reno, Nev. - The USF baseball team took an early lead, but Nevada rallied with nine runs in the third inning and had a big offensive day in defeating USF 21-5 Tuesday afternoon in Reno, Nevada.
After a scoreless first inning USF scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning on three hits to take an early 2-0 lead. Nevada scored a single run in the bottom of the second on two hits. Third baseman, Jacob Butler drove in center fielder, Jeff Tolotti, who had singled with a sacrifice fly that pulled Nevada withing a run, 2-1. An error by Pack shortstop, Taylor Pullins led to an unearned run by the Dons in the top of the third and again the Pack trailed by two, 3-1. Nevada took control off the game with a nine-run third inning to go in front for good 10-3. Right fielder, Mike Hass led off the inning with a home run and also doubled in the inning to score two of the runs. Third baseman, Jacob Butler tripled with the bases loaded to drive in three of the nine Nevada runs. Of the Pack's nine runs scored only one was earned. The Pack scored in seven of eight innings in which they batted and hit four home runs in a game for the third time this season and second time at Peccole Park. In addition to Hass' home run, Butler hit a two-run shot in the fourth, designated hitter Tony Cappuccilli led off the eighth with a solo home run and Curtis Wickwire belted a pinch hit three-run shot as part of the Pack five-run sixth inning. For Wickwire it was his ninth hit of the season of which six have been home runs. Pack senior, George Moran(1-0) picked up his first win of the season allowing four runs, three earned in six innings of work. Freshman, Ryan Leake pitched two scoreless innings and fellow freshman, David Woods allowed a single run pitching the ninth.
For USF shortstop, Armand Gaerlan(3-for-4,R) and left fielder, Alfonso Valdez(3-for-4) had three hits each in the game. Catcher, Joe Jacobitz(2-for-5R,2RBI,HR) and first baseman, Steve Booth(2-for-4,R) had had a pair of hits apiece. Jocobitz had a solo home run in the fifth for the Dons. Starter Zach Brooks(2-2) took the loss lasting just 2.2 inninngs surrendering seven runs of which just three were earned. In all USF sent six pitchers to the mound in the game.
USF will host West Coast Conference foe St, Mary's Friday at 3:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 1:00. |
