April 23, 2004

Box Score

(Los Angeles) - San Francisco led early but a five-run sixth inning, including a three-run homerun by James Cooper, powered Loyola Marymount to a 6-3 West Coast Conference baseball victory Friday at Page Stadium. The Diamond Dons (19-23, 7-9 WCC) led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth against the Lions (24-17, 14-5 WCC), who improve to 15-2-1 at home.

USF managed just five base hits on the afternoon, keyed by a 2-for-4 day by senior catcher Nick Cirbo, who doubled. Sophomore infielder Andrew Smith drew three walks and had an RBI in the contest. Senior shortstop went 1-for-4, as did senior infielder Chris Genung who slammed his team and WCC-leading 17th double of the season in the fourth.

LMU scored first, capitalizing on a two base error on an RBI groundout. USF answered in the third, tying the contest. Cirbo led off with a double to left center and scored on an RBI groundout by Smith.

San Francisco added two more runs in the fourth after a leadoff single by Gaerlan followed by an RBI double from Genung, who later scored on an RBI groundout by freshman designated hitter Blake Nelson staking the Diamond Dons to a 3-1 advantage.

Loyola led off the sixth with back-to-back singles to set the stage for Cooper, who connected for his first career long ball - a wind-aided three-run blast to stake the Lions to a 4-3 edge. LMU was not done, tacking on two more runs to take a 6-3 lead they would not surrender.

LMU starter Stephen Kahn (6-2) would not need any more help, collecting the win allowing three runs off five hits - none coming after the sixth - and added three strikeouts. Senior right-hander Kevin Rose suffered the loss for the Diamond Dons, allowing six runs (five earned) off seven hits and struck out three.

USF plays LMU in game two of the WCC set Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Page Stadium.

NOTES: With his 17th double of the season, Chris Genung shares sixth place on the two-bag list with five Diamond Dons, most recently Jeramy Janz (2001)... Dustin Delucchi stroked 22 doubles in 2000 for the single-season lead... after doubling in the fourth, Nick Cirbo shares 10th place on the career doubles list with 31, one shy of ninth place held by Armand Gaerlan (32).
