Dons Rally For 11th Inning Victory Over Nevada 6-5

Andrew Smith scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 11th inning to earn the USF Dons a 6-5 win over the University of Nevada Tuesday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno.
USF, who hosts San Diego in WCC play this weekend improved to 21-24 overall.
USF rallied for the win after holding an early 4-0 lead. Dons' outfielder Scott Cousins started the 11th inning with a single and third baseman Andrew Smith's sacrifice bunt was thrown down the first baseline by Pack pitcher Brian Simpson. Cousins attempted to score all the way from first base on the play but was cut down by right fielder Jacob Butler at the plate. Smith moved to second on the play and advanced to third base on a fly ball to the outfield where he later scored on Simpson's wild pitch with two down to give USF the 6-5 lead.
Nevada attempted to tie the game in the bottom of the 11th inning and left two runners on base when the game ended. Shortstop Eric Newman reached on an error and was sacrificed to second base by center fielder Brian Gazerro where and moved to third base on a ground ball to second base. With two down Butler was intentionally walked and first baseman Austin Graham struck out looking to end the game.
The Dons scored two runs off Nevada starter Matt Renfree in each of their first two at bats to go in front 4-0. RBI singles by catcher Blake Nelson and left fielder Joe Jacobitz scored the two runs in the first inning. Second baseman Cy Donald and first baseman Chris Genung had RBI hits in the second inning to give USF the 4-0 advantage.
The Pack scored three runs in the bottom of the second to pull within one at 4-3. Newman, Gazerro, and third baseman Brett Hayes had an RBI each in the inning. Nevada tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning that knotted the score at 4-4.
The score remained tied at 4-4 until each team scored a run in the 10th. USF's run was earned while the Pack scored their run on a Gazerro's sacrifice fly to left field that tied the game at 5-5 and sent it to the 11th inning.
Brian Borgmann(2-1) got the win pitching two innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
Six USF players had a two hits in the game and five different players collected an RBI for the Dons.
