USF Baseball Falls To Gonzaga 1-0

(San Francisco, CA) - In a pure pitchers dual, the University of San Francisco couldn't push across a run as it fell to Gonzaga 1-0 in West Coast Conference play at Benedetti Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The USF (22-23, 5-9 WCC) loss rounds out the series at one-all as The Zags (27-20, 10-4) earn their tenth WCC victory.
Senior right-hander Jason Dufloth (5-4) earned the loss, but did stretch his scoreless innings pitched to a career high 12.1 innings. Dufloth previously threw 5.0 scoreless last weekend at Portland, and continued with 7.1 versus the Bulldogs. He allowed eight hits and recorded six strikeouts without walking a batter. Dufloth got out of quite a few jams before leaving in the eighth with two runners on base. Senior left-hander Cole Stipovich came in and struck out a batter before giving way to senior right-hander John Quine, who threw the final 1.1 innings and struck out two.
With the score knotted at 0-0 and one out in the eighth, Gonzaga's junior right-fielder Brian Winston singled through the right side and advanced to second on junior third baseman Darin Holcomb's single to center. An out later, senior catcher Dustin Colclough reached on a throwing error by Dons freshman third baseman Derek Poppert which allowed Winston to cross the plate.
That would be all the Zags would need as senior right-hander Clayton Mortensen (6-2) threw a complete game shutout. Mortensen scattered four hits and struck out 10 Dons without walking a batter.
Senior left-fielder Jonnie Knoble had two hits, including a double, giving him 173 for his career, which puts him in a 14th place tie with Reggie Brown (1976-79) on the Dons all-time hits chart. Knoble also stole his team leading 19th base. Junior second baseman Joey Railey and freshman Derek Poppert singled.
USF and Gonzaga play the rubber match tomorrow at Benedetti Diamond. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
