Dons Top Golden Bears On Eleventh Inning Rally For Fourth Straight
April 30, 2002
San Francisco, CA - Pinch hitter Blaine Umeda laced a one-out single to left center field to score the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh as USF came from behind twice to win its fourth straight 8-7 over California Tuesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond in the City. After Cal second baseman Carson White hit his first home run with no out in the top of the eleventh off the Dons' Jeremy Kinney, USF started its winning rally in the bottom of the frame. Armand Gaerlan struck out to start the frame but advanced to first on a passed ball. Joe Jacobitz walked and Steve Booth sacrificed the two runners to second and third. Alfonso Valdez singled home the tying run sending Jacobitz to third. After an intentional walk to Royce Fukuroku, Umeda stroked a liner into the left-center gap ending the game. The Dons (14-35) fell behind early as the Golden Bears (26-23) scored three in the first inning on singles by David Wiener, Colin White, David Nicholson and a double by Justin Nelson, and added another a run in the second on a home run by Brad Smith. Pitcher Zack Brooks kept the Dons in the ballgame allowing just one run over the next five innings, as the home team rallied to take the lead.
USF scored three in second inning, highlighted by an RBI triple by Royce Fukuroku and an RBI double by Khamis Zananiri, and added two runs in the third on Steve Booth's 18th home run of the year and a run scoring single by Ryan Sittauer. Booth earlier in the day was named WCC Player of the Week.
Cal went ahead with single runs in the seventh and eighth, but Cy Donald's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth tied it again, setting the scene for extra-inning heroics. Jeremy Kinney (3-4) pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing just one run to get the win for USF, who open a three-game series at Portland Friday, while Creighton Kahoalii (0-1) took the loss for visiting Cal. |
