Box Score

(Portland, OR) - USF earned a road split in a West Coast Conference baseball double-header Friday at Pilot Stadium. Portland (21-22, 13-10 WCC) won the first contest 3-1 as two Pilot pitchers combined for a two-hit gem. San Francisco (15-36, 6-18 WCC) rallied from a two-run deficit to seize a 7-5 win in the nightcap. Sophomore shortstop Armand Gaerlan was the catalyst for USF offensively, finishing the day 6-for-8 with three doubles and three RBI for the Dons and accounted for both base hits in the opening contest. Sophomore right-hander Kevin Rose (1-4) earned his first win of the season in relief today and went 3.2 innings, allowing one run off two hits and recorded four strikeouts.

Game Two: USF 7, Portland 5 - San Francisco's bats erupted for 16 hits in the nightcap after generating only two base hits in game one. Gaerlan led the way for the Dons with a 4-for-5, two double and three RBI outing. The bottom three hitters in the order were also productive for San Francisco as freshmen Blaine Umeda (2-5), Jimmy Milkovich (2-4 RBI) and Khamis Zananiri (1-2, sac. bunt) accounted for five hits and scored four runs.

Freshman infielder Royce Fukuroku went 2-for5 with a double, while sophomore outfielder Joe Jacobitz knocked in a pair of runs with a single in the four-run sixth.

Junior right-handed reliever Zach Brooks collected his first career save, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing just two hits and added a strikeout.

Game One: Portland 3, USF 1 - USF mustered only two base hits, both from sophomore shortstop Armand Gaerlan, as the Dons dropped a 3-1 pitcher's duel against Portland in the first game of a double-header Friday at Pilots Stadium. Senior right-hander Peter Dunkle (2-8) pitched well for the Dons and the defense played well behind him, but USF's offense struggled against Portland starter right-hander Steve Chamberlain (6-2) and reliever Eric Hollod, who took the mound to record his seventh save of the season for the Pilots.

Dunkle started with great command and retired 12 consecutive Pilots before allowing a one-out single to Cory Lunde in the fifth inning.

San Francisco had opportunities in the contest and stranded eight runners on base. USF had two aboard with one out in the seventh and eighth innings, but could not capitalize.

USF plays the Pilots in the rubber match of the three-game WCC set on Saturday. Game three is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start at Pilots Stadium.
