Dons Drop Finale 7-4 at No. 13 Cal Poly

(San Luis Obispo, CA) - San Francisco held a 4-2 lead through seven innings, but a five-run eighth by No. 13 Cal Poly dropped the Dons 7-4 in the non-conference finale at Baggett Stadium on Sunday afternoon. USF falls two games under .500 at 23-25 on the season.
Cal Poly put up a run in the third, but USF plated two in the following frame to take a 2-1 lead. With two on freshman first baseman Nik Balog smacked an RBI single to left and junior second baseman Robert Abel had an RBI groundout to shortstop.
In the sixth, junior catcher Ryan Lipkin homered to left center with a runner on to make it 4-1. In the bottom of the frame, a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated hitter D.J. Gentile to bring the Mustangs to within two, 4-2, but a five run eighth gave Cal Poly a lead they would not relinquish.
Sophomore right-hander Jonathan Abramson (2-2) took the loss in relief, giving up three earned runs off two hits in 0.1 innings. Freshman Matt Chavez tossed 2.0 innings, allowing one earned run off two hits, with a walk and two strikeouts in his first career start.
Sophomore third baseman Stephen Yarrow led the Dons with three doubles on the day. Lipkin's homer was his fourth of the season. Balog had two hits and an RBI, and sophomore center fielder Connor Bernatz rounded out the Dons eight hits.
Mustang's junior Mark DiVincenzi (5-1) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings, with a walk and two strikeouts. Starter Mason Radeke gave up all four Dons earned runs, off eight hits, with two walks and five strikeouts.
USF plays its final home game of the 2009 season on Tuesday, welcoming Pacific for a non-conference game at Benedetti. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
