USF Baseball Falls to Sacramento State 8-6
May 4, 2004
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - USF dropped its third game of the year to Sacramento State Tuesday afternoon, as the Hornets knocked off the Dons 8-6 at Hornet Field. USF (22-27) knocked out 14 hits on the game, but the four home runs by Sacramento State (25-30) proved to be too much to overcome.
USF jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Chris Genung followed an Armand Gaerlan double with his fourth home run of the season.
Sacramento State would waste no time getting those runs back, as they took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first after a three-run homer to left center by Brian Blauser.
After USF tied up the game with a RBI ground out in the top of the second, Sacramento State used the long ball to take the lead back once again, when leadoff man Jack Arroyo hit a two-run homer to left field to make it a 5-3 game.
Sacramento State added another run in the sixth to make it 6-3, but in the seventh inning the Dons looked to cut into that lead. Freshman Blake Nelson led off the inning with a home run to right field. It was Nelson's first of the year and of his career. Cy Donald would add RBI double, and two batters later, Genung would drive him in with a single to tie up the game. Donald had a huge day at the plate, going 3-for-4, with a double, and RBI and run scored. Genung went 2-for-5, with three RBI, including his homer in the first.
The day belonged to Arroyo and Blauser. The tandem would each hit their second homers of the game in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively andput the game away for the Hornets, 8-6. Arroyo finished 3-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and four RBI. Blauser went 2-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored and four RBI.
Nick Pereira (0-4) was the hard luck loser for the Dons after giving up one run on one hit while walking one and striking out one in his only inning of work.
Junior Brandon Hall (1-0) earned the win for the Hornets. Sophomore James Wheeler earned his second save of the season with 0.1 innings of work.
Next up for the Dons, Santa Clara comes to town for a three game WCC series at Benedetti Diamond. The first game is set for Friday, at 3:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday's games are scheduled for a 1:00 PM first pitch.
