USF Drops 2-1 Pitchers Duel at No. 9 San Diego

Final Stats

(San Diego) - USF got a strong pitching effort from junior left-hander Aaron Poreda, but No. 9 San Diego got a bases loaded, one out single from catcher Jordan Abruzzo to seize a 2-1 victory Friday afternoon in West Coast Conference action at Cunningham Stadium. The Dons (24-24, 6-10 WCC) threatened, connecting for eight base hits in the contest, but the Toreros (36-14, 14-2 WCC) made the plays they needed.

In a match up of two of the league's top left-handers, neither Poreda (6-6) nor sophomore southpaw Brian Matusz disappointed. Poreda went the distance, allowing two runs off 10 hits and struck out three and walked three. Matusz went 8.0 innings, allowing one run off seven hits and struck out three and walked a pair.

Junior infielder Mitchell Bialosky finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double, while senior designated hitter Chris Bacigalupi went 2-for-3.

USF struck first after freshman infielder Derek Poppert earned a one-out walk and stole second, followed by a double smashed to leftfield that appeared ready to leave the park, but bounced on the warning track. San Francisco threatened in the sixth with back-to-back singles with one out by senior outfielder Jonnie Knoble and Poppert, but both were stranded after a flyout and a Matusz strikeout. The Toreros tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single from outfielder Logan Gelbrich.

San Francisco also stranded a pair in the eighth. Junior infielder Joey Railey and Knoble singled giving the Dons two on with no outs, but back-to-back fielder's choices and a infield pop-up ended the inning.

USF looks to even the series Saturday, in game two of the WCC series. First pitch against the Toreros is set for 1:00 PM at Cunningham Stadium. USF will send senior right-hander Jason Dufloth (5-4) to the hill.
