USF Falls to Santa Clara 17-5
May 7, 2004
SAN FRANCISCO - It was a tough day on the Hilltop for the Diamond Dons as the Santa Clara Broncos scored a run in each of the first seven innings to cruise to a 17-5 victory over USF Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. USF (22-28, 9-13 WCC) fell behind early as Santa Clara (21-26, 10-12 WCC) pounded out 17 hits in route to the West Coast Conference win.
Junior second baseman Royce Fukuroku was the hitting star of the day for the Diamond Dons. Fukuroku had three hits on the day, including his first home run of the season, the seventh of his career. He also scored two runs and drove in a pair.
Senior Armand Gaerlan moved into a tie for third place on the all-time hits list at USF when he singled in the seventh inning. His 236 hits tie him with Arnie Sambel, who played for the Dons from 1987 to 1990. Gaerlan has a 18 game hitting streak going for the Dons after Friday afternoon's game.
Robert Perry smacked two home runs for the Broncos and Jason Mattuecci had four hits to lead the offensive attack. Every starter in the Santa Clara line up had a hit, a run scored, and an RBI in the win.
The same two teams square off again Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM. It is also Fan Appreciation day at USF, so come out and enjoy the action.
