May 8, 2009
(San Diego, CA) - San Francisco baseball dropped the first of a three-game West Coast Conference series with San Diego, 10-1 on Friday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium. The Dons fall to 24-26, 8-8 WCC, while the Toreros improve to 23-28, 11-3 WCC.
USF couldn't overcome a tough pitching performance by San Diego's A.J. Griffin (8-3). The junior right-hander tossed a complete game, his second of the season, giving up just one earned run off five hits and a walk, and struck out eight.
Dons junior centerfielder Bobby Ethel scored the only run for the Dons, hitting a lead off homerun in the top of the ninth.
Sophomore left-hander Matt Lujan (4-7) took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) off 10 hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. Seniors Zach Kim and Drew Johnson, junior Ryan Lipkin, and sophomore Stephen Yarrow each singled in the contest.
Game two of the WCC series is set for tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
