Diamond Dons Take Series with 9-1 Win at San Diego

(San Diego, CA) - San Francisco baseball took the season series from West Coast Conference foe San Diego with a 9-1 victory at Cunningham Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Dons also took the series 2-1 last season at Benedetti Diamond, over a Torero team then ranked No. 8.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Hiserman (4-5) tossed his second complete game, allowing just one earned run off seven hits, with two walks and eight strikeouts. Hiserman leads the Dons with 81 strikeouts on the season.
USF put up a quick run in the first off a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Derek Poppert. Zach Kim had led off the inning with a walk, and stole his team and WCC leading 35th base of the year. He moved to third on a throwing error by Toreros catcher Nick McCoy.
USD tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame on a double by Sean Nicol and a sacrifice fly from James Meador. The Dons added another in the third. Junior second baseman Robert Abel doubled to start the inning and advanced to second on senior third baseman Dane Braunecker's sacrifice bunt. Abel then moved to third on Kim's fly out to center, and scored on junior center fielder Bobby Ethel's single through the left side.
San Francisco broke the game open in the fifth, putting up a five spot. With two on, Kim singled through the left side to start the scoring. Ethel singled to left to load the bases, before Poppert cleared them with a triple to right center. Poppert then finished the scoring after sophomore first baseman Stephen Yarrow singled to right field, putting the Dons up 8-1.
USF added one final insurance run in the sixth when Braunecker scored on a wild pitch by reliever Darrin Campbell.
Abel and Ethel led the Dons with two hits each. Poppert's triple was his team leading third of the season. He also led the team with four RBI today. Along with Kim, senior right fielder Drew Johnson and freshman catcher Mason Morioka both stole a base in the contest.
Matt Hauser (4-2) took the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) off seven hits, with a walk and five strikeouts. Nicol led the Toreros with three hits.
USF returns to the field tomorrow, meeting San Diego State at 2:00 PM.
