Late Rally Falls Short Against Cal 8-5
May 13, 2003 (Berkeley) - San Francisco rallied late, but could not come all the way back, falling 8-5 against Bay Area rival California in non-conference baseball action Tuesday at Evans Field. The Dons (24-29) drop the season series to the Bears (28-27). USF was shut out for the first five innings as Cal right-handed starter Matt Brown (4-8) cruised early. Cal's offense scored a run in the third, two in the third and one in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth. San Francisco bounced back with a pair of runs to cut the score to 4-2, but the Bears registered another tally in the bottom to take a 5-2 lead. Cal broke the game open with a three-run seventh to jump ahead 8-2. USF did not go quietly, plating three runs in the top of the eighth, capitalizing on a pair of Cal errors. Junior Brian Borgmann (0-6) suffered the loss for San Francisco, allowing four runs (three earned) off eight hits in 5.0 innings. Cal right-handed closer Jesse Ingram collected his eighth save of the season pitching 1.2 innings, allowing no hits with one strikeout. Freshman outfielder Jonnie Knoble, senior outfielder Jason Howard each went 2-for-4, as did junior catcher Ryan Hanson, who added an RBI. Junior infielder Joe Jacobitz finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and a sacrifice fly.
San Francisco returns to action Friday when they travel to Sacramento State for the opener of a three-game set with the Hornets. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
