USF Baseball Downs Portland 11-6 in WCC Series Opener

(Portland, OR) - USF broke open a 4-2 ballgame with a six-run sixth and cruised to a 11-6 West Coast Conference victory against Portland Friday in the series opener at Pilot Stadium. The Diamond Dons (24-29, 11-14 WCC) improve to 4-0 against the Pilots (10-39, 5-20 WCC) this season.
Junior leadoff hitter Cy Donald went 4-for-4 with a double and four RBI in the contest. Senior infielder Chris Genung added a three-run homerun, capping USF's six-run sixth. It was Genung's team-leading sixth long ball of the season and his third homer in his last five games. Freshman outfielder Lucas DeLong launched his fourth homerun of the season, a solo shot, in the eighth.
Senior southpaw Derek Tate went the distance for the Diamond Dons, allowing six runs off eight hits and struck out six in his second complete game effort this season against the Pilots and third overall.
Senior shortstop Armand Gaerlan went 2-for-6 with a double and an RBI, extending his hitting streak to 21 games. Former USF All-American Taggert Bozied is the career leader with a 22-game string in 2000, while Dustin Delucchi also had 21 the same year.
Sophomore infielder Andrew Smith, senior designated hitter Joe Jacobitz and senior catcher Nick Cirbo all recorded a pair of hits for USF, who tallied 17 on the day with four doubles and two homeruns.
USF returns to action Saturday for game two against the Pilots. Freshman right-hander Ryan Muller is scheduled to start. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Pilot Stadium.
