Box Score

(Sacramento) - USF opened up the final series of the 2003 season at Sacramento State, suffering their first shutout of the season to the Hornets, 3-0 Friday in non-conference action at Hornet Field. USF (24-30) could not overcome an impressive complete game shutout tossed by right-hander Chris Kinsey (7-6) of Sacramento State (32-23).

After three scoreless innings, Sacramento State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth after a two-run single by Rincon. Olsen led off the inning with a base hit to center field. With two outs, sophomore Bret LeVier and freshman Jim Strombach each singled to load the bases. In the next at-bat, Rincon pulled a 2-2 pitch to left field to put the Hornet ahead. Olsen made it a 3-0 contest in the fifth when he pulled a solo homer down the right-field line with two outs.

Dons' senior right-hander Bryan Williams (5-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out five and walking none in nine innings of work in his final start for San Francisco. Williams finishes his career on the Hilltop with seven career victories and four complete games.

For USF it was the first shutout they have suffered in the 2003 season and the first since being blanked 11-0 at Pepperdine last April 21. Sophomore infielder Royce Fukuroku collected the only extra base hit of the afternoon for the Dons with a double in the seventh. Junior catcher Ryan Hanson, junior infielder Joe Jacobitz and freshman outfielder Jonnie Knoble collected the other hits for USF.

USF returns to action when they host the Hornets in game two Saturday May 17 at Benedetti Diamond in the 2003 USF home finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM with senior day festivities scheduled to begin at 12:45 PM. In addition, Saturday is also "Fan Appreciation Day".
