USF Baseball Drops Season Finale to Portland, 1-0

(Portland, OR) - San Francisco baseball dropped a heart breaker, 1-0 to Portland in the regular season finale at Joe Etzel Field on Sunday afternoon. The Dons (28-28, 12-9 WCC) couldn't break through tough pitching from Portland's (25-26, 7-14) Zach Varce, who tossed his first complete game shutout of the season.
Varce, in just his fourth start of the year, gave up the Dons seven hits, walked two, and struck out eight.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Hiserman also threw well in his third complete game, allowing just one earned run off six hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts.
UP's lone run came in the seventh off an RBI single from catcher Rocky Gale.
USF had runners as far as second in the first, second, fourth, and eighth, and had the bases loaded in the seventh, but couldn't convert.
Junior shortstop Derek Poppert and freshman designated hitter Nik Balog each singled and doubled. Junior center fielder Bobby Ethel smashed the Dons third double of the contest. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Yarrow and senior third baseman Dane Braunecker rounded out the Dons seven hits.

Game Notes: The shutout is the first for the Dons this season, and first in their last 75 games, dating back to an 8-0 loss to Santa Clara on April 18, 2008.
