USF Drops 11-6 Decision to Pepperdine in 2004 Finale
May 23, 2004
(San Francisco) - USF hosted Pepperdine in the rubber match of their three-game West Coast Conference series Sunday at Benedetti Diamond in the regular season finale for both teams. San Francisco could not muster enough senior day magic, dropping a 11-6 decision against the Waves.
USF (27-32, 14-16 WCC) managed 11 base hits off an erratic Pepperdine (26-30, 19-11) pitching staff, but the Waves offense erupted for a seven-run third inning to seize control of the contest. Pepperdine collected 16 base hits in the contest and capitalized on a pair of Dons errors.
San Francisco seniors did their part as the six seniors in the starting lineup accounted for nine hits and three RBI. Infielder Craig Click went 2-for-6 with an RBI, while outfielder Joe Jacobitz went 2-for-4, collecting a base hit in his final collegiate at-bat. Infielder Nick Cirbo went 2-for-4 with a double, while designated hitter Ryan Hanson went 2-for-5 with an RBI double for the Dons. Shortstop Armand Gaerlan wrapped up his career with a 1-for-3 day with an RBI and a pair of walks.
It was a tough day for senior right-hander Kevin Rose (5-8), who started in his record 47th game for USF. Rose surrendered eight runs (seven earned) off nine hits, but struck out three, moving into sole possession of third place on the USF career strikeout list with 254. Senior left-hander Brian Borgmann pitched 4.0 solid innings allowing two runs off six hits.
Senior right-handed reliever Brandon Boesch (4-6) collected the win for Pepperdine, allowing no runs off two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Sophomore infielder David Uribes led the Waves offensively, leading off the game with a homerun to left, his sixth of the year, and finished a single shy of the cycle. Junior infielder Steve Kleen added a 3-for 6 day with a double and a pair of RBI, while senior outfielder Cory Brightwell went 3-for-4 and scored twice.
