USF Baseball Wins First Game Of 2000 Season
TUCSON, Arizona - San Francisco pulled out all the stops against 19th ranked Arizona as they avoided a sweep and earned a 16-10 victory- their first of the 2000 campaign. Behind a six-run eighth inning, the Dons put themselves ahead for good in a contest which featured six lead changes. Among the offensive highlights for the Dons, sophomore infielder Jesse Foppert returned to the starting lineup and hit his first home run of the year. Junior third baseman Taggert Bozied went 1-for-3 with an RBI triple, a sacrifice fly, and two runs scored. Senior infielder Tony Hurtado who came into the season needing only one hit by pitch for the NCAA career record, got hit twice, giving him 70 for his career and sole possession of the mark. On the day, Arizona pitchers hit six batters- a school record. Pitcher Jesse Mena (1-0) earned the win for the Dons, while Mike Meyer took the loss (0-1). The Dons improve to 1-3 on the season, while Arizona falls to 4-2. USF will be in action again on February 5 in their home opener against Cal State Hayward.
