(Sacramento) – USF traveled to Sacramento State to open the 2001 campaign against the Hornets in the Sacramento State Jamboree. Unfortunately for the Dons, Hornet’s starter Mike Miranda was waiting for them and he pitched a complete game three-hitter for the win.

USF got on the board with a three-run first inning, keyed by base hits from senior third baseman Tagg Bozied and junior catcher Steve Booth as Miranda walked in a run. Sacramento answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first and would later score the go-ahead run in the fourth. Miranda would take it from there, allowing just one hit the rest of the way and retired the side in order three times.

Junior right-hander Chris Thogersen (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs off six hits. Thogersen recorded a pair of strikeouts, but issued three free passes and hit four Hornets.

Offensively, no Don recorded more than one hit, led by Bozied’s leadoff single in the first, Booth added an RBI single and senior shortstop Jared Carvalho added a single in the third inning for USF. Junior infielder Jesse Foppert collected three walks and got an RBI off one of the free passes.

USF continues play in the Sacramento State Tournament on Saturday when they play a non-conference game against the Saint Mary’s Gaels. First pitch is at 10:00 AM at Hornet Field.
