    (San Jose) - USF scored two runs in the sixth inning and went on to seize a 4-2 victory against San Jose State University in a non-conference game Wednesday at Blethen Field. Senior outfielder Chad Soares propelled the Dons with a monster 4-for-4, two double performance.

    With the USF improved to 6-4, while San Jose State, a 2000 College World Series participant is now 6-4-1 overall.

    USF took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on senior third baseman Tagg Bozied's RBI single. The Dons made it 2-0 in the fourth when Jason Howard drove in Booth, who had walked, with a base hit.

    San Jose State tied the score in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Jason Van Over and Patrick Wood both singled. They both scored on John Fagan's double.

    Back-to-back doubles by Soares and junior catcher Steve Booth broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning. Senior shortstop Jared Carvalho followed with a sacrifice bunt and senior infielder Luke Gradishar hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Booth.

    Freshman right-hander Kevin Rose (2-0), pitched seven strong innings for USF and allowed just a pair of runs off four hits. Junior right-hander Peter Dunkle pitched a hitless ninth inning to record his first save of the season, third of his career. Casey Minister (0-1) took the loss for the Spartans.

    USF returns to action in a three game home series against UC Riverside. First game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 23 at 2:00 PM at Benedetti Diamond.
