USF Baseballs Rally Falls Short Against Spartans 9-8
USF trailed 7-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Dons slumbering bats woke up. Unfortunately for San Francisco, San Jose States offense didnt cool off as the Spartans seized a 9-8 victory in non-conference baseball action Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond. USF (10-10) drops their fourth consecutive game, while the Spartans (14-6-1) win their seventh straight. With the win, Spartan head coach Sam Piraro becomes the all-time wins leaders in SJSU baseball history with 468. San Jose States Gabe Lopez hit a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning to spoil USFs rally and secure the win for the Spartans. USF scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning and added another in the eighth off an RBI triple from senior infielder Taggert Bozied to tie the score at 7-7 heading into the ninth inning. Bozied launched his 50th career homerun in the fifth inning and finished his day 3-for-5 with a triple, homerun and two RBI and was a double shy of the cycle. Junior right fielder Jeramy Janz also went 3-for-5, while junior infielder/pitcher Jesse Foppert went 2-for-5 with an RBI double. Junior catcher Steve Booth continued his hot hitting ending the day 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Foppert came on to pitch for the Dons in the ninth with the game on the line and recorded two strikeouts, before giving up the final hit of the contest. Junior left-hander Jeremy Kinney (1-2) suffered the loss for USF after allowing two runs off two hits in 1.1 innings. Spartan reliever Matt Kauffman got the final two outs for his second save of the season. Jahseam George (2-0), pitched the seventh and eighth innings, for the victory. USF returns to action when they host the Bulldogs of Gonzaga in a three-game West Coast Conference series beginning Saturday, March 17. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Benedetti Diamond.
